Success at Hawke's Bay A & P Wine Awards

Clearview Estate won double silver at the recent Hawke's Bay A & P Society's Wine Awards, announced on 14 October 2009.

Our 2007 Old Olive Block Cabernet Sauvignon blend won a silver medal in the Cabernet Sauvignon dominant blend category.  This win is an impressive fourth silver medal for the wine so far this year, in addition to a 4.5 star rating from the influential Australian magazine Winestate.

Our 2008 Reserve Semillon also won a silver medal in the Sauvignon Blanc/Semillon class.  Reserve Semillon is a style only produced by Clearview in vintage years and the silver medal adds to the wine's strengthening pedigree.  Earlier this year the Reserve Semillon had won a bronze medal at the Royal Easter Show and had gained a 4 star rating in Winestate magazine.

Other wins at the A & P awards included bronze medals for the 2009 Black Reef Blush in the Rosé category and for the 2008 Cape Kidnappers Merlot Malbec in the Merlot class.  The bronze for the Blush is on top of two silver medals and one bronze from competitions earlier in the year.  The medal tally for the Merlot Malbec now totals three bronzes so far this year.

Hot Red Hawkes Bay

The 'Hot Red' Roadshow was red hot this year with great feedback on our wines as winemaker/proprietor Tim Turvey presented them to trade and public in Christchurch, Wellington & Auckland.  This event is becoming a sellout feature for wine lovers and the public are falling over themselves for Bordeaux blends after a market saturation of pinot noir and syrah.

Clearview Estate Wines have a Royal Audience

Prime Minister John Key hosted a state dinner for the King and Queen of Spain recently, a friendly occasion that showcased the culinary talent of Ruth Pretty, who catered the event.  It was also a chance to present some of the finest wine the country has to offer, organisers carefully selecting wines to match each delectable course.

The evening drew to a close with an unctuous concoction of white and dark chocolate mousse with an orange curd meringue tart and rich brownie ice cream, perfectly set of by cult classic Clearview Estate Sea Red dessert wine.

Clearview Estate celebrates the first release from the 2009 Vintage

The wait for the first wine of the 2009 vintage is over, with Clearview Estate announcing it’s first release, our popular Gewurztraminer, due Thursday 4th June.  We believe this is the first release in Hawke’s Bay for 2009.

For the last two months, the winemakers at Clearview Estate have been sporting the very bernie, charles, helma, kelly, tim, maarea, barry, russell

latest in vintner chic – dark circles under the eyes, crumpled overalls that have managed an average of 6 hours on the bedroom floor before being donned for another day’s work, grizzly beards and the all-important thousand-acre stare! As for the majority of wineries in Hawkes Bay, Clearview Estate has experienced an excellent grape-growing season with record tonnage across all varieties over the 2009 vintage. Rumours that the ’09 season will rival the much-lauded ’98 are rife, but the proof will be in the tastings and competitions that wineries enter this year.

As well as being the first release, the Clearview Estate Gewurztraminer is the first variety harvested from our 5-year old Sandler Block. Normally averaging around 4 tonnes per acre, it was harvested twice to maximise flavours and push all limits. Handpicked on 18th and 24th March, it yielded a massive 8 tonnes at 23.8 brix & 3.5 pH – a perfect balance which is all-important with this variety. Sharing elegance and purity of flavour with lovely lychee, ginger and Turkish Delight characters. The grapes were carefully pressed under CO2 gas – no flavours were lost and a controlled slow ferment at 10 degree C ensured all the subtle nuances were preserved.

After cold-settling and filtration the first of Hawke’s Bay’s whites is released after only 2½ months – fresh, vibrant, youthful and crammed full of aromatics that will continue to develop over the next 8-10 years. Clearview Estate’s Gewurztraminer will be available through our restaurant, cellar door and selected outlets from 4th June, 2009.

As the Gewurztraminer is being released it is interesting to note that Clearview Estate’s Noble Harvest Chardonnay grapes are still on the vine and yet to be harvested.

2006 ENIGMA takes the Merlot Trophy

The NZ international wine show 2008. The same trophy which we won last year for the OLD OLIVE BLOCK

INTERNATIONAL PRAISE FOR CLEARVIEW'S ENIGMA

30th June 2008 Clearview Estate Winery of Hawke’s Bay has received glowing praise from UK wine writer Robert Joseph in the UK daily newspaper The Telegraph.

Joseph declared the 2006 Clearview Enigma “Classy and worth keeping” in his recent article in the daily newspaper, .  After travelling to New Zealand as part of his year long research for a wine travel guide, Joseph, an obvious advocate of New Zealand wines, stated “I would go as far as to say that no wine-producing country does a better job of welcoming tourists.”

Not only did Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc and Central Otago Pinot Noir get a general mention, but Clearview Estate was singled out as a Hawke’s Bay producer for its top quality Bordeaux blend “Enigma”.  “Made from the traditional Bordeaux combination of Merlot, Malbec, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc, this is a very Bordeaux-like wine,” Joseph stated.

Clearview Estate winemaker and co-owner Tim Turvey is proud that Joseph rated the 2006 Enigma a 4/5, “Clearview Estate has been at the forefront of producing Merlot dominant blends for twenty odd years and the Enigma is our premium wine in that category.”  Turvey states.

In a recent review of the New Zealand wine industry, Neal Martin, wine writer for the highly influential Robert Parker, made bold positive statements regarding the quality of Hawke’s Bay Bordeaux blends.  “Perhaps echoing Chardonnay, one forgets just how fine New Zealand’s Cabernet Sauvignon and Bordeaux blends can be, particularly in Hawke’s Bay…”
