HAWKES BAY HOSPITALITY AWARDS 2010

The nominations for the 3rd annual Hospitality Awards are in, and we are pleased to announce that we are finalists in not one, but 2 categories - Best Ambience & Style, and Tim Turvey, owner/winemaker, has been nominated for Hospo Personality of the Year!

Organised by a dedicated committee of industry professionals in association with Food Hawke’s Bay, the Hawke’s Bay Hospitality Awards are supported by local branches of the Restaurant Association of NZ, Hospitality Association of NZ, Chefs Association and Hospitality Standards Institute.  It is a prestigious event, where industry professionals recognise their fellow peers and the great work that they are doing.

The winners will be announced at the awards ceremony on 24th May, 2010.

CREATIVE HAWKE'S BAY ART INVITATIONAL

HASTINGS CITY ART GALLERY  10th April - 27th June 2010

Creative Hawke's Bay's Art Invitational this year will introduce a new element that will cement its place as a fixture on the New Zealand art calendar.

The annual exhibition, now in its fourth year, will be strengthened by the introduction of a curator. Nationally renowned curator Tim Walker has been engaged by Creative Hawke's Bay to provide a focus for the exhibition. Ros Stewart, Chair of Creative Hawke's Bay, believes the appointment of a curator will result in a visually more coherent exhibition.

"Having Tim Walker on board will really increase the value of the project, for the standing of the event but also for the artists themselves. The Art Invitational is about Creative Hawke's Bay's commitment to the professional arts in Hawke's Bay. It's about raising the 'Art IQ' of the whole region. We are always looking for ways to make sure we're putting up the very best show possible" said Ms Stewart.

Tim Walker has been a curator and director in art galleries and museums for over 15 years. He was the influential director of the Dowse Art Gallery as it became The New Dowse in 2008. He has also held senior management and curatorial roles at the Auckland Museum, The Museum of NZ/Te Papa and the National Art Gallery. For five years Tim was on the judging panel of the Norsewear Art Awards and was also a judge of the Hawke's Bay Review in 1999 and 2000.
Tim commends Creative Hawke’s Bay for introducing a curatorial role for the Invitational.

“Where this step has been taken in other similar situations it has both increased the value of the project for the artists – who receive fresh feedback from a particular ‘outside’ professional point of view – and the standing of the event in the eyes of local communities, funders, governance bodies etc” he says.

Creative Hawke's Bay's Invitational is a major exhibition that celebrates excellence in contemporary art. Fewer artists have been selected than in past years with a total of 32 artists being invited to take part. All contributing artists were born in Hawke's Bay or have spent significant time living in the area. All works are available for purchase.  

A black tie opening event will take place on Friday 9 April. Tickets to this special event will be available from Creative Hawke’s Bay and the Hastings City Art Gallery.

Midlands Hawke's Bay Charity Wine Auction 2009

2009 Auction

The 2009 Midlands Hawke's Bay Charity Wine Auction will be held at the Assembly Room of Hawke's Bay Opera House on 31st May, 2009.  

Our entry for the 2009 auction is:

An exclusively created ¼ barrique of Bordeaux style wine.

With the assistance of Clearview’s award winning winemakers the winning bidder will create their own Bordeaux style blended wine. The winner will have the choice of premium Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec and Cabernet Franc wines from the great 2008 vintage.

The successful bidder will receive instruction and guidance from our winemakers at their own private wine blending workshop and will then have the opportunity to blend their own red wine using the four main Bordeaux grape varieties. The winner's own ¼ barrique (56 litres) will then be blended to their specifications, bottled and labelled for delivery prior to Christmas 2009.

HOT RED HAWKE’S BAY 7 - 9 July 2009

Each year Tim and a number of other Hot Red Hawke’s Bay winemakers travel to Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch, spreading the word about Hawke’s Bay’s fabulous red wines.

Combining new world fruit flavours with old world structure, Hawke’s Bay’s red wines are unique in their style and are renowned world-wide. The Hawke’s Bay region has the largest plantings in New Zealand of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, so is arguably the red wine centre of the
country!

There will be over 20 Hot Red Hawke’s Bay winemakers with over 100 top red wines in one place at the same time! By attending you get to meet the winemakers and sample premium red wines with them.

RECENT EVENTS at CLEARVIEW

THE HB ART INVITATIONAL 2009 

The Hawkes Bay Art Invitational is an annual autumn black tie event that showcases contemporary artist’s association with the Bay. The excellent work from both emerging and established artists is a fundraiser for the Art Gallery’s winter lecture series and a fine showcase of the region’s talent.

The Clearview restaurant closed on Friday 24th April, our chefs, waitstaff and senior staff arrived at the Hastings City Art Gallery with enough food and wine for 200 people.  With just under an hour until the crowd turned up, the crew managed to set up a mobile kitchen, bbq and a wine stand and enjoy a very quick preview of the art work on display before running to their respective work stations.

The artists turned up first, like nervous mums and dads at their first child’s teacher-parent conference, tweaking at their sculptures and triple-checking the lighting over their paintings. Some grabbed the chance at a quick glass of wine before the guests arrived, and took their positions in the gallery.

The guests, all decked out in their finest, seemed to arrive at once, and the evening was in full swing before we knew it. Plenty of warm hugs, air kisses and laughter filled the room as old friends greeted and introductions were made. The wine flowed and the canapés followed in quick succession, and the waitresses had to start devising new strategies to get the food to different parts of the room before their trays were pounced upon (amazing how quickly people learn what door food appears from).

The two hours seemed to fly by, the auction of commissions ended successfully and every morsel of food was devoured. The suggestion of ‘after parties’ seemed to hang in the air and the event ended with smiles, congratulations and promises to return with friends. WRITERS IN WINERIES ~ "THE TASTE OF PLEASURE" - a food & wine presentation by John Saker (CUISINE wine writer) & Catherine Bell (of DISH magazine)

Clearview was delighted to host this new event as part of the Hastings Literary Festival on march 20th. To a rapt audience of 60, John Saker & Catherine Bell presented four ‘taste’ courses each matched with Clearview wines.

It was a unique format and worked very well with great atmosphere on a balmy evening. John & Catherine gave some humorous and evocative readings relevant to the joy of food & wine, taste, smell & travel.
The dishes were superbly prepared by Kerry MacKay from Catherine’s recipes as follows:

• Grilled tuna w green olive relish & Reserve BF Sauvignon Blanc 07

• Truffle risotto w Reserve Chardonnay 07

• Rosemary & fennel roast pork w Two Pinnacles Malbec C/S 07

• Dense chocolate cake w Sea Red
