About Us

History

Told in 1988 that it was" too cold to grow wine grapes", Tim Turvey went ahead and bought this property at Te Awanga, HB. He took this as a challenge, and together with business partner Helma van den Berg, they planted the first vines were  in winter 1988. They went on to plant 2500 trees, including avocados, olives, melia and bay trees, lavender and citrus. Vineyard plantings were continued at 3 acres per annum. Tim and Helma grafted and planted their grapevines, rammed the posts, ran the wires and trained the young vines, for many years also doing all the pruning. They also designed and built the winery, adding to the cellar door and restaurant as the business grew.

Winemaking Philosophy

left to right:  russell mayne, tim turvey, barry riwai, andrew mcneil

Fruit driven wines in a Hawke's Bay style reflecting the terroir of Te Awanga, Hawke's Bay.

"I want our wines to leap out
unashamedly from the glass and say
I'm Hawke's Bay Chardonnay, Sauvignon, Cabernet - etc"

Reserve whites and reds infused with the complexity of barrel ferments and French oak influence. Complexities achieved from skin contact (whites), extended maceration (reds), lees stirring and contact, malolactic fermentation and SUPER ripe fruit.
